"Much Like Disease-Ridden Cities of the Past, Many Modern Urban Areas Are Choking on Growth"

- Nancy Kete, in a speech at WCDC, compares challeges facing 19th century London and Paris to those facing today's rapidly growing cities around the world.

On February 16, Nancy Kete offered her vision for the sustainable city of the future during a speech at the World Conference on the Development of Cities (WCDC) in Porto Alegre.

Her co-panelists included Steven Berlin Johnson, the author of the Ghost Map, which chronicles how innovative thinking helped London solve its cholera epidemic and shaped the future of the city; Charles-Mathieu Brunelle, Director of TOHU, a circus, culture, and arts center in Montreal sustainably built on what was the second largest urban landfill in North America; and Professor Bernhard Müller, urbanist and director of the Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development (IOER) in Dresden.
